On our way out of Phoenix from our little slice of paradise at the JCC we fought city traffic and a little more wind than most of us appreciated. But a lovely surprise awaited us at the first water break. Chris and Megan had secured lots of free donuts for all!
From there we continued southeast along 87 for what seemed like forever. There wasn’t a whole lot to look at and the sun was blaring down upon us. Finally around mile 55 we rolled into lunch.
Those of us lucky enough to have internet on our phones (not me...) noticed that not far from lunch was the Casa Grande National Monument. Obviously, it warranted a stop. After filling up on peanut butter and jelly I headed out with Katie, Travis and Bryce. We reached the monument after 5 miles and road over to check it out. It was $5 to enter and we figured that money would be better spent on crappy souveniers so we eyed the monument from the gate and were on our way again shortly.
The next 35-40 miles seemed like they lasted forever. We ran into a guy who is walking across the country to inspire people to live a healthier lifestyle. When our photo shoot with him was over we rode on to Picacho Peak State Park.
The last 10 miles seemed to last forever, but finally we came to the park enterance and we greeted with a little hill that seemed entirely unnecessary at that point.
I was so happy to get off my bike and relax for a while, but instead a walk to Dairy Queen seemed like a good idea. We took fabulous camping showers (some of the nicest showers we've had so far), watched the sunset, had a hobo dinner D’Ardenne style, s’mores and campfire stories with Bryce.
A brilliant idea was proposed to hike bright and early (well not bright exactly) so we all hit the hay a little bit early so the 4:45am alarm wouldn’t be quite as painful.
